Yoga Therapy for Fall Prevention: A Transformative Program at JAM

Falls are a serious concern for older adults, with more than one in four experiencing a fall each year. Yet, less than half report it to their doctor. At JAM, we recognize the importance of proactive health initiatives, which is why we are thrilled to be offering Yoga Therapy for Fall Prevention—a groundbreaking series designed to empower our senior community members with balance, strength, and confidence. Led by Kierra Boylan, our Yoga Therapist and Chief Wellness Officer, this program is transforming lives in our community.
Why This Program?

Kierra was inspired to create this program after hearing countless stories from our senior community about how falls had impacted their lives. Their desire to regain confidence and prevent future falls led to the development of this series.

How Does Yoga Therapy Help?

Unlike traditional yoga, yoga therapy is a specialized approach tailored to individual needs. This program specifically enhances:

Balance & Coordination – Strengthening stabilizing muscles and improving awareness of body positioning.

Strength – Focusing on core, leg, and ankle strength to improve stability and prevent falls.

Flexibility & Mobility – Gentle stretches that improve joint mobility and make it easier to recover from missteps.

Confidence & Awareness – Helping individuals recognize and correct imbalances before they lead to falls.

Reaction Time – Controlled movements that train the body to adjust quickly to sudden shifts in balance.

Fear of Falling – Breathing exercises and relaxation techniques that reduce anxiety, which can contribute to falls.

Simple At-Home Movements

While participating in our classes provides the greatest benefits, there are simple movements anyone can practice at home to improve balance:

  • Gentle Joint Freeing Movements

  • Seated Cat/Cow, Twists, and Lateral Bends

  • Marching (Seated or Standing) – Every step you take is a balancing pose!

The Role of Mindfulness in Fall Prevention

Mindfulness is a key component of yoga therapy and plays a crucial role in fall prevention. It helps:Improve Body Awareness – Reducing missteps and improving balance.Enhance Focus & Attention – Preventing distractions that could lead to falls.Encourage Intentional Movement – Promoting slow, controlled actions to maintain stability.Reduce Fear of Falling – Managing anxiety and preventing hesitation that could cause instability.Strengthen the Mind-Body Connection – Improving reaction time and balance recovery.Promote Relaxation – Reducing stress and muscle tension that can contribute to falls.

What to Expect in a Session?

Each session is designed to be engaging, supportive, and accessible. Participants can expect:

  • A check-in and awareness practice

  • Gentle therapeutic movements tailored to personal goals

  • Practical exercises for home practice

  • A fun and inclusive environment filled with lots of laughter!

What Sets This Program Apart?

Unlike a typical yoga class, yoga therapy is highly individualized. A standard yoga instructor completes 200 hours of training, whereas a yoga therapist requires a minimum of 800 hours**. Kierra, who leads this program, has over 1,000 hours of training. There are no contraindications in yoga therapy, as movements are designed to meet each participant exactly where they are. Sessions are small and personalized, ensuring that each individual receives the attention and modifications they need for success.

Through our partnership with the DeKalb County Health Department and the HFI Grant, we are thrilled to offer this life-changing program at no cost to participants! Their support allows us to remove financial barriers and create opportunities for all community members to take control of their health and well-being. Yoga therapy is not about extreme flexibility or getting up and down from the floor—it’s about building strength, confidence, and balance in a way that feels right for you.
